The Terrified ConscienceHebrews 10:17

The Year It Was Settled

This message is for the wrong you named at nineteen and have confessed again every time the memory arrives, twenty-two years on

The courtyard smells of lamb and cardamom and the dust that comes up off the tiles when somebody throws the water down before a meal.

Twenty-six people. Three tables pushed into one long one under the vine, plastic chairs borrowed from four different houses, and a boy going round with the bread basket because his mother handed it to him and he has decided this is the most important job anybody has ever been given.

And halfway through, Yusuf stands up.

Everybody knows. That is the thing about this family. Everybody knows, including the boy with the bread, who stops exactly where he is and looks at his mother.

Yusuf is sixty-one. He is holding the edge of the table with both hands, the way a man holds a lectern, and he begins again on the thing from 1998. The business. The words he said to his brother Rami in the doorway of the shop with half the street listening and the shutter half down.

He has done this before. He did it at the wedding in 2011. He did it in the car park after the funeral in 2016. He did it once at a hospital bedside so quietly that nobody else in the ward could hear it, and he is doing it now, in front of twenty-six people and a boy holding bread, and his voice is going the way his voice goes.

Rami lets him get four sentences in.

Then he reaches across the corner of the table and takes hold of his brother's wrist. Not hard. The way you take hold of a kettle handle.

"Sit down," he says.

Yusuf keeps going. There is a part he has not reached yet, the part about the doorway, and he needs to get to it properly, because the last two times he did not say it properly.

"Yusuf." Rami does not raise his voice at all. "Sit down. The matter was settled the year it happened. I settled it. You have kept the court open by yourself for twenty-seven years, and every year you stand up and read the charges out to a room where nobody is prosecuting."

The vine moves. Somebody's phone buzzes and gets turned face down. Yusuf stands there a moment longer with his hands still flat on the table.

Then he sits, all the way back, and his shoulders touch the chair, and the boy starts moving again with the bread.

You know that courtyard, even if you have never stood in one. Yours might be a bathroom mirror, or a car in a driveway with the engine off, or the ten minutes before sleep when the house has finally gone quiet and your mind has not.

You were nineteen. Or twenty-three, or eleven. You named it properly the first time, and you have named it properly perhaps four hundred times since, because every time the memory arrives it arrives with an instruction attached: say it again, and this time mean it more.

So let me show you where the verdict is actually kept. Not to argue you out of your own conscience, but because you have been reading charges to an empty bench.

The Year It Was Settled

Nobody in that room is prosecuting

Here is the sentence the writer of Hebrews built a whole argument in order to arrive at, and then, having arrived, could not leave alone.

Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more. Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.Hebrews 10:17 to 18

Read the second half slowly, because the second half would have emptied Yusuf's courtyard twenty-seven years earlier.

There is no longer any offering for sin. Not a smaller one. Not one you may bring annually at family gatherings when the shame comes up your throat. There is none, because the account it would have gone toward has been closed, and an offering brought to a closed account is not devotion. It is a man reading charges to a room where nobody is prosecuting.

Now hear this, because it is not my opinion about your Thursday. You are forgiven of the thing you named at nineteen. Not eligible for forgiveness. Not likely to be forgiven if the next confession is worded better than the last one. Forgiven, in the past tense, by a decision taken without consulting your feelings and one your feelings cannot reverse. I am not handing you my own encouragement here; I am handing you what God has already written down, and His Spirit is the one carrying it into you as you read, which is why some of you have gone very still.

Watch what your conscience does with that, because it is clever and it has had years of practice.

It does not argue with Hebrews. It never argues with Hebrews. It simply says: yes, but was mine done properly.

That is the whole trick, and it is worth seeing plainly. The question has quietly moved from what God did to what you did. From the finished offering to the quality of your remorse. Once it has moved there you can never get an answer, because there is no meter in your chest that measures sincerity, and the harder you look for one the more suspicious you become of the looking.

You have been thorough. Somebody ought to say that to you out loud, because nobody ever does. Thoroughness is not the missing ingredient here. You have been the most diligent person in the building for twenty-two years.

And thoroughness was never the currency, which is the mercy in it. Scripture puts the weight on His act and not on the polish of your account of it, and the Holy Spirit has never once waited for a well-worded confession before assuring a person. The written word says He remembers it no more. He is not being generous with a technicality. He is telling you where the file went.

So here is what is true of you right now, before you feel a single thing. You have a verdict. You are not waiting on one. The court that had jurisdiction over that afternoon sat, and heard it, and ruled, and the ruling is in your favor, and it was in your favor before you woke up this morning. That is written, and it is the Spirit of God who makes a written thing land in a living person, so if something in you loosened just then, that was not the lamp of your own effort finally catching.

There was a man in a monastery, five hundred years ago, who confessed for hours at a stretch. Hours. Then went back over the going back, in case something had been missed in the missing. The man set over him grew tired of the list and pointed him somewhere else entirely, and it took him years to understand what he had been pointed at. He was not lazy. He was the most careful man in that house, and careful was exactly what could not save him.

You are in that man's line. Not his failure. His discovery: that the written word lays the whole weight on what Christ did, and that the Holy Spirit is the one who walks a settled thing off the page and into a living person.

The breakthrough

So tonight is not another confession. It is the closing of a private court that never had jurisdiction.

You are not going round again. Not because the thing did not matter, and not because you have decided to go easy on yourself, but because Scripture says it was heard in the only court that outranks yours, and the Holy Spirit is standing over that ruling right now. Reopening it downstairs is not humility. It only wears the clothes of humility. It is a small daily discourtesy to a verdict that cost Him everything to hand down.

And if the shame comes up your throat again on Tuesday afternoon, that will not mean the case reopened. Shame is a feeling with no legal standing. It can knock. It cannot file.

You are going to sit back, and let the ruling stand, and find out that nothing terrible happens when a man stops presenting evidence.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, sitting back. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you letting yourself off anything: the ruling is yours because He gave it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written verdict into a felt one. Whether the feeling arrives tonight or in a year is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.

  1. Old case, you are closed, and I am not reading the charges to you again. Scripture says their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more, so the file you keep waving at me was destroyed by the only Judge who ever held it.
  2. Fear that I confessed it wrongly, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Jesus is the offering, and the Word says that where there is forgiveness there is no longer any offering for sin, so the standard was never the wording of mine.
  3. Father, You settled this the year it happened, and Your Spirit is the one telling me so while I sit here. I am forgiven of what I named at nineteen, and I am sitting all the way back in the chair.
