Ray keeps it in the glovebox.
Spiral notebook, seventy pages, the wire bent flat on one end from being shoved in beside the registration and a tire gauge and about nine hundred receipts. The front of it is feed orders and a phone number for a fellow who fixes augers. The back of it, working forward from the last page, is something else.
I found this out at a diner on Route 12 in October, the kind of place where the coffee is not good and nobody has ever once complained about it. Ray had gone out to the truck for something and came back in with the notebook, and he sat down and turned it over and opened it from the wrong end, and slid it across the table to me like a man handing over an X-ray.
Handwriting going back years. Some of it in pen, some in pencil, one entry in what looked like a carpenter's flat marker because that is what he had.
And every line had been crossed out.
And several of the lines had been written back in underneath, and crossed out again, and written back in a third time.
I sat there a while. Ray drank his coffee and looked out the window at the parking lot because he did not want to watch me read it.
I said, "Ray, this top one here. This is 1989."
He said, "Yep."
I said, "It has been crossed out four times."
And he said, without turning around, "Well. I cross it out. And then I get about eleven miles down the road and I am not certain the crossing out took, so I put it back."
That is the whole thing right there. That is a man who has never once doubted that God forgives. Ray would have told you God forgives before I finished asking. What Ray doubted was whether the pen he was using was real.
Now maybe yours is not a notebook. Maybe it is a note on your phone with no title. Maybe it is nowhere at all except a place in your head you can go to at will, and you can recite it in order, oldest first, and you have never written a word of it down because writing it down would make it a thing.
But you have a list. That is why you are still reading. And every time you take it to God you take the whole list, because leaving one off feels like hiding one, and the last thing a person in your condition wants is to be caught hiding.
So let me tell you where the original went. Not a copy of it. The original.

Somebody took the paper
Paul, writing to a church that never met him, reaches for a picture out of a courthouse and not out of a temple.
He has canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.Colossians 2:14
A certificate of debt was a real document in that world. Handwritten, itemized, signed by the one who owed it, and kept somewhere it could be produced. That is not a feeling. That is paperwork, and it can be brought into a room and read out loud.
And Paul says three things happened to it, in order, and the third one is the one that gets Ray out of that diner.
It was canceled. It was taken out of the way. And it was nailed up in public where the whole street could see what had been done with it.
So hear this, because you have been living as though the original is still in a drawer somewhere waiting on you. You are debt free in the only ledger that was ever legally binding, and the document that itemized your 1989 was not filed, not sealed, not archived. It was destroyed in public. I am not making that up to comfort you; it is written down, and it is the Spirit of God who takes a written thing and presses it into a person until they feel the floor under it.
Here is why the list keeps coming back, and it is not because God keeps re-issuing it.
You have a copy. That is all. And a copy of a canceled document looks exactly like the original, because it was photographed before the cancellation. It has the same handwriting on it. It has your name at the bottom in your own hand. The only thing it does not have is legal standing, and legal standing is invisible, which is why the copy can still make your stomach turn at eleven miles down the road.
Your conscience is not lying to you about the entries. It is lying to you about the jurisdiction.
Now let me say the thing that will annoy the careful part of you, because you deserve to have it said and not danced around.
Going through the list again does not make the forgiveness more thorough. It makes you more familiar with the list.
Every recitation grooves the entries deeper. You are not clearing them; you are memorizing them, and after twenty years of that you know your own worst material better than you know a single promise of God, which is a strange kind of scholarship for a person who loves Him to end up with.
So stop trying to complete the list, and start reading what the Word says was done with it. You have been given a righteousness that is not yours by production, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over you waiting for a better inventory. He is standing beside you pointing at a cross where a piece of paper with your handwriting on it went up in public, and the promise was never that you would keep good records. It was that He would.
There was a man five hundred years ago who was so afraid of missing an item that he would confess for six hours and then come back the same afternoon because something had surfaced. He was not careless. He was the most careful man in the building, and his confessor eventually told him to go and find something real to be sorry about, which was not kindness so much as exhaustion. That man's whole life turned when he stopped auditing himself and read a sentence about a righteousness that comes from God and is received rather than assembled.
You are standing where he stood, on the same floor, holding the same notebook.
So this is not another pass through the list.
You are going to close it. Not burn it in some dramatic way you will feel odd about tomorrow, and not perform anything. Close it, and put your hands on it, and leave it closed while somebody who has never once misplaced a promise tells you what has already been done.
The certificate is gone. What you have is a copy with no standing, and copies lose their power the moment you stop treating them as evidence and start treating them as history.
And if it comes back to you on Thursday at eleven miles down the road, you are not going to reopen the drawer. You are going to say out loud that it was nailed up in public, and drive on, and let the Spirit of God do with your stomach what only He can do, in His own time.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud with your hands flat on it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you canceling your own debt: the cancellation is yours because He paid it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a legal fact a felt one. Whether that lands tonight or in a season is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.
- List, you are canceled, and I am not writing you back in eleven miles down the road. Scripture says the certificate of debt was taken out of the way and nailed to the cross, so what I am holding is a copy with no standing.
- Fear that I have left something off, get off this truck in the name of Jesus. Jesus itemized nothing and covered everything, and the entry from 1989 was included in a payment made before I could write.
- Father, You took the paper out of the way where the whole street could see it, and Your Spirit is telling me so with my hands flat on this book. I am forgiven, and I am not the keeper of my own ledger.
