Chi has been right for eight years and it has cost her a friend.
The thing itself is almost embarrassing to write down, which is how these things always are. At a wedding in 2017, in front of about nine people, Bea said something confidently wrong about somebody's father, and Chi corrected her.
Chi was right. She is still right. If you went and looked it up this afternoon, Chi would be right.
But she did it in a particular voice, with a particular small laugh in it, and Bea went the color of the tablecloth and said something short, and got up, and spent the rest of the evening with a different group of people.
They have not spoken since, except for a message about a funeral in 2021 which was four lines long and correct.
Chi has written the apology at least six times.
That is the part nobody knows. There is a note on her phone called B and it has drafts in it going back years, and she has read them all at various points on trains and in car parks.
And her sister Amara read them this January. All six.
And she put the phone down and said: "Chi. Every single one of these ends with you winning."
Chi said what do you mean.
"Version one has but I was right. Version two does not say it, it just explains what you meant, which is the same thing wearing a coat. Version three apologizes for how it came across, which is not an apology, that is you being sorry about her hearing. Four has a paragraph about what she said to you in 2015. Five is short and it has if in it. Six is the best one and it still finishes with a sentence that makes sure she knows the facts have not changed."
Then she said the thing.
"You do not want to be reconciled. You want to be reconciled and right. And she cannot give you both."
Now let me ask you about yours.
You know exactly who this is. And the reason you have not said it is not stubbornness in the way people mean it. It is that saying the plain thing would require you to hand over a fact you have been holding for years, and that fact is genuinely true, and giving it up feels like lying.

Leave it there and go
Jesus says something in the Sermon on the Mount that is startling in what it interrupts.
Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.Matthew 5:23 to 24
Look at where He stops a person. Not on the way to worship. At the altar. Mid act. With the gift already in their hands.
And look at the direction of the remembering: your brother has something against you. Not that you have something against them. He is talking to the person who may well be in the right and who nonetheless has left somebody carrying something.
Leave your offering there. Which is a shocking instruction, because it means an interrupted act of worship is better than a completed one performed by somebody who has just remembered a person they are not speaking to.
So hear this over you, with six drafts on your phone. You are the one being sent, and the fact that you were correct has never once been the thing standing in the way. That is written down in the Lord's own words, and it is the Holy Spirit who convicts a person gently about a specific name at a specific moment, which is what has been happening to you every time you open that note.
Now let me name the exact thing, because your sister already found it and you have not been able to look at it.
You are trying to write a sentence that repairs the friendship without releasing the fact.
That sentence does not exist. Not because Bea is unreasonable, but because an apology with a defense in it is not an apology, it is a settlement offer, and everybody can smell one.
And here is what makes it so hard, and it is worth honoring. The fact is true. You are not being asked to say you were wrong about a thing you were not wrong about, and nobody here is telling you to lie.
You are being asked to stop mentioning it.
That is the whole of it. Not to recant. To let it go unsaid, permanently, and to apologize for the only thing you actually did wrong, which was not the correction, it was the small laugh in front of nine people.
That costs something. It costs you being seen to be right, which after eight years has become a small permanent possession, and letting go of it will feel for about a day like losing.
Scripture says do not merely look out for your own interests but also for the interests of others, and it says it right after describing Christ, who had every fact on His side and let go of the demonstration of it. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a person able to release a true thing they were entitled to hold, and He does that without ever making them say a false thing instead.
Let me guard one flank before I go.
This is not about apologizing for whatever anybody accuses you of in order to keep a peace. That is not humility, that is a habit, and it does its own damage.
It is about one specific thing you actually did, said plainly, with the defense removed and no requirement that she respond well.
There was a man five hundred years ago who was famous for not backing down, and who wrote to a colleague after a bitter public dispute that he had been sharp in a way the truth did not require, and apologized for the sharpness without withdrawing a word of the substance. He knew the difference. Most people never learn it.
So tonight you take the defense out.
Not the friendship, not the whole history, not the eight years. One draft, with every sentence that starts with but or because crossed straight out, and everything that explains what you meant, and everything that reminds her of 2015.
Whatever is left is the apology. It will be about two lines long and it will feel dangerously thin, and thin is what an apology is supposed to feel like from the inside.
Jesus tells the person at the altar to put the gift down and go first, and He says it to the one who is remembering rather than to the one who is owed. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to let a true thing lie, and He never once asks anybody to say a false one.
Put the gift down. Go.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud after you have read it back. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you pretending to be wrong: the releasing is His work, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to let a true thing lie unsaid. Whether she answers this week or never is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.
- Fact I have been holding for eight years, you are true and you are going unsaid, and I am not putting you in the last line of one more draft. Scripture says leave your offering there before the altar and go, and He says it to the one doing the remembering.
- Need to be reconciled and right at the same time, get out of this cafe in the name of Jesus. Jesus had every fact on His side and let go of the demonstration of it, and nobody can hand me both.
- Father, You sent me before You wanted the gift, and Your Spirit is the one making me able to let this lie. I can say what is true and survive saying it, and I am putting the gift down and going.
