Saying It Out LoudPsalm 32:3

The Version at the Table

This message is for the version of the story your family tells that is not true, and that you have let stand for six years because the true one costs more

Marisol has heard the story told about eleven times and she has never once corrected it.

It gets told at gatherings, usually by her aunt Chavela, usually to somebody new who has married in and does not know the family history yet. It takes about ninety seconds and it always ends the same way, with a small sad shake of the head and the words and of course after what Beto said, what could she do.

Beto is her sister's husband. In the version at the table, Beto said a thing at a birthday in 2019 that drove Marisol out of the family business, and everybody has been quietly a little cool with Beto ever since, and Beto has never defended himself because Beto is not a man who defends himself.

The true version takes about nine seconds.

Marisol had already decided to leave. She had decided in the January, for reasons of her own, some of them good and one of them not, and she had not told anybody. And at that birthday she said something to Beto, first, that was worse than what he said back, and he said his thing after hers and in front of fewer people, and by the following week the story had assembled itself in the family the way stories do, and Marisol let it.

Not a lie. She has never told anybody the false version. She simply did not correct it, eleven times, over six years, while a good man took the weight of it.

At the christening in the spring, Chavela told it again to Beto's own nephew's wife, who had not heard it.

And Marisol, who was standing four feet away holding a paper plate, watched Beto across the room hear it happen and pretend to be busy with a chair.

She went out to the car park and stood by a wall and could not get her breath properly for a minute.

Six years is a long time to carry nine seconds.

Now let me ask you what yours is.

It might be a story about why you left. It might be a story where somebody else is the difficult one and you know exactly how the difficulty started. It might be a kindness credited to you that was somebody else's, which nobody would ever check, and which you have never once put right.

You did not build it. That is what makes it possible to live with. You just did not take it down.

The Version at the Table

What the silence was doing to your body

David writes about a period of not saying something, and he does not describe it spiritually. He describes it physically.

When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer.Psalm 32:3 to 4

My body wasted away. Not my peace. Not my joy. His body, and his energy, and the whole passage reads like a man describing an illness.

That is not poetry. Anybody who has carried an uncorrected story knows exactly what he means: it is in your chest at family gatherings, it is why you did not go last Christmas, it is why you cannot hear that particular aunt's voice start up without your stomach doing something.

And then look at what he says happened next: he acknowledged it, and he did not cover it, and the relief he describes is immediate and physical too.

So hear this over you, standing by that wall in the car park. You are able to tell the truth about your own part in this, and the nine seconds it takes are shorter than the six years you have been paying. That is written down in the plainest description of guilt in the Bible, and it is the Holy Spirit who convicts gently and specifically, which is why you have known exactly which story I meant since the second paragraph.

Now let me be very careful about what this asks of you, because a message like this can be turned into something destructive in about a minute.

This is not a family meeting.

You are not standing up at a christening. You are not making an announcement, correcting the record in front of everybody, or humiliating an aunt who has been telling that story in good faith for six years.

You go to Beto.

One person, in private, and you say the true version with your own name in the front of it: Beto, I said something to you first at that birthday, and it was worse than what you said, and I had already decided to leave in the January and I never told anybody. And I have let people be cool with you for six years. I am sorry.

That is nine seconds. That is the whole of it. And notice what is not in it: no requirement that he forgive you, no request that he go and tell everybody, no plan for how the family will be informed, and no explanation of the reasons of your own, some of them good and one of them not, because he did not ask and does not need them.

What happens after is not yours to control. He may say very little. He may say something generous that will be hard to receive.

And whether the story at the table ever changes is genuinely not the point. You are not doing this to fix the record. You are doing it because a true sentence owed to a man is a true sentence owed to a man, and because your body has been paying for the silence since 2019.

Scripture says the one who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but the one who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion, and it is the Spirit of God who gives a person the words at the moment and steadies them through the pause afterward.

And here is the safety on it. You are not the only thing holding this family together. God is. He has been holding it through six years of a false version and He will hold it through nine seconds of a true one.

There was a man five hundred years ago who wrote that a conscience carrying something unsaid is a tyrant that never stops collecting, and that the moment a thing is said plainly to the person it concerns, the tyrant loses its office, because it only ever had power in the dark.

The breakthrough

So tonight you say the true version out loud, alone, with your own name in it.

Not to him yet. Here, first, in a room, so that the first time you hear it is not also the first time he hears it, because a sentence said out loud once already comes out steadier the second time.

Nine seconds. Your name at the front. No reasons attached.

David says the silence wasted his body and the saying brought relief, and God put that in the songbook as a description of how a person actually works. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives the words and the moment and does the rest of it long after you have stopped speaking.

And whatever the family says at the next christening is not the measure of anything. You are not doing it for the table.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud after your own name. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you settling anything by your own effort: the compassion is His and He gives it freely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person through the saying. Whether he answers well or barely at all is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.

  1. Six years of silence, you are not loyalty to anybody, and I am not paying you for a seventh. Scripture says when I kept silent my body wasted away and my vitality was drained away as with the heat of summer, and that is a description of my last six Christmases.
  2. Fear of the nine seconds it takes, get off this car park wall in the name of Jesus. Jesus is the one who has been holding this family through a false version, and His grip on it does not loosen while I tell a true one.
  3. Father, You give compassion to the one who confesses rather than to the one who conceals, and Your Spirit is telling me so with my own name still in the room. I can say what is true and survive saying it, and I am not letting a comfortable version stand another year.
